About The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë by Syrie James

In this “can’t-miss novel for Brontë fans and historical fiction buffs alike” (Sacramento Book Review), you’ll be treated to a story in Charlotte’s own words about her journey from obscurity in the wilds of Yorkshire to her acclaim as the author of Jane Eyre, one of the most beloved books in the English language. Discover what motivated Charlotte to write Jane Eyre—and, astonishingly, how many parts of it are autobiographical.

Meet Charlotte’s talented and equally driven sisters Emily and Anne; their drug addicted brother Branwell; their eccentric father Patrick; Monsieur Heger, the Belgian professor Charlotte adored but could never have; and Arthur Bell Nicholls, the Irishman who loved Charlotte for years before he had the nerve to propose.

The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë—deeply compelling and intensely researched—explores the passionate heart and unquiet soul of Charlotte Brontë. It is Charlotte’s story, just as she might have written it herself.

Available in trade paperback, e-book, and an award-winning audiobook narrated by Bianca Amato.

About Unnatural Creatures: A Novel of the Frankenstein Women by Kris Waldherr

For the first time, the untold story of the three women closest to Victor Frankenstein—his mother Caroline, bride Elizabeth, and servant Justine—is revealed in a dark and sweeping reimagining of Frankenstein by the acclaimed author of The Lost History of Dreams and Doomed Queens.

Stunningly written and exquisitely atmospheric, Unnatural Creatures shocks new life into Mary Shelley’s beloved gothic classic by revealing the feminine side of the tale. You’ll never view Victor Frankenstein and his monster the same way again.

Available in e-book, hardcover, softcover, and audiobook narrated by Barrie Kreinik.

  21. Jen Dowdy on October 19, 2022 at 7:41 pm

Even if I do not win this book I am most interested in it. I was curious as to, in your historical research into Charlotte’s life and situation, you were able to visit Yorkshire. If so I would be interested as to how that trip went.

    • Syrie James on October 19, 2022 at 9:21 pm

Hi Jen! I did visit Yorkshire when I researched THE SECRET DIARIES OF CHARLOTTE BRONTE. I spent two days at Haworth Parsonage, where the Brontes lived, and had a 90-minute private meeting with the museum curator where I was allowed to view, touch, and read original manuscripts, letters, and other documents belonging to every member of the Bronte family. I also visited other related locations, including the homes of some of Charlotte’s friends, places Charlotte visited, and the former Roe Head School, which Charlotte attended and where she later worked as a teacher. It was an incredible, unforgettable experience that informed my novel in indescribable ways.

    • Denise on October 28, 2022 at 8:30 pm

Thank you for the chance to win. Reading gothic novels is my kind of Halloween treat.

  22. Gerti Z on October 21, 2022 at 11:50 am

I would love to win this book, because Syrie James is a marvelous author! I’ve read “The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen” by her, and found it to be very well written and loved the novel approach to the Austen legend. Just checked my personal copy of the book (on my Austen shelves!) and I dog-eared a dozen pages, which only happens when I want to remember many parts of the text. Like Ms. James wrote in the “Editor’s Foreword”, I also find Cassandra’s burning of so many of JA’s letters to be a tragedy, and wish we could magically find more from that author. Luckily, Ms. James provided a delicious substitute! Regarding Bronte, I just sent a Bronte family portrait postcard to a friend/English teacher at Hillsdale College at the beginning of the school year to cheer her. She has to spend the semester teaching Henry James, whereas we both prefer teaching Austen and the Brontes.

  23. Trish on October 21, 2022 at 8:27 pm

I love historical fiction and would love to read this. I just finished reading The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews.

  24. Anna Mae Cline on October 28, 2022 at 5:53 pm
